There are two forces that work to prevent a person from committing immoral acts. One is an emotional aversion to such acts that each individual builds up over a period of time as a result of enculturation and frequent reflection. The other is one's values, and the beliefs that one creates based on those values. Use of the latter requires a certain degree of mental functioning that cannot be be relied upon in unexpected or complex situations or in times of distress - this leaves only the former. But the former can be gradually broken down through a process of desensitization. Thus, incessant reflection is essential.

People (or me at least) seem to go through cycles of questioning and reinventing themselves.

I made a long trip around Lake Michigan. I drove Blueberry across Wisconsin to spend two nights at Berzerker in the Keweenaw. Instead of returning to work I headed downstate to visit my parents and grandpa, then caught a train for Chicago and a bus for Beloit. Now I am back to work.

I feel much better now, and am looking forward to the end of summer and beginning of fall.

Cognitive dissonance is the perception of incompatibility between two cognitions... it is the uncomfortable tension that comes from holding two conflicting thoughts at the same time. The contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance between cognitions.

"Guests at barbecues and picnics may sit at a picnic table or some other form of outdoor furniture. If the picnic is in a park (especially where fireworks are held), a picnic blanket may be set on the ground and participants eat the food sitting down on the blanket."

Now I know how it's done.

"It's a wonderful thing to be clever, and you should never think otherwise, and you should never stop being that way. But what you learn, as you get older, is that there are a few billion other people in the world all trying to be clever at the same time, and whatever you do with your life will certainly be lost-swallowed up in the ocean-unless you are doing it along with like-minded people who will remember your contributions and carry them forward."

So I worked a full day today.

I drove around on country roads. I took photographs of barns and some old bridges. Walked around in the crunchy remains of last year's cornfields. Got shocked by an electrified fence. Sat in tall grass under a shady tree in a lonely rural cemetery and made notations on topographic maps, and then drew a few maps of my own. Visited one of those white Protestant churches, and trespassed around an abandoned farmhouse.

When the things that you normally do for fun suddenly become your job, stuff can get very unsettling. I'm still trying to figure it all out.

A week ago this evening I stood on Main Street in Ann Arbor and tried a door handle, finding it to be locked. With that act, I concluded a year of graduate school and, having just quit all three of my jobs earlier that day, was finally free of the oppressive business (as in 'busy-ness') that had fallen on me several months earlier and prevented me from experiencing important stuff like the blossoming crabapple tree under which I had just parked Windfall. I took a few minutes to notice these things and then headed over to Catherine Street to see Magic Mountain.

On May Day in Ann Arbor pretty much everybody is in a good mood, and BT, Purple Meg, and I were no exception. We sat on the porch listening to the bands and enjoying the spring evening.

That night I drove across Ohio and by sunrise was once again south of the Mason-Dixon line. As I drove I listened to music from much earlier in my life, circa 1997. Perhaps there is something about one's cognitive development that causes experiences from middle adolescence to make deeper connections than than those from earlier or later. Certain songs, artists, prose, and even sensations from then will always have more profound an effect on me than any others ever could, even though some more recent ones have gotten very close. I often wonder about the feasibility of wanting to share what another person sees.

I kept thinking about ninth grade English with Mary Kay, and the ongoing discussions of romanticism and realism or whatever she called them. At the time (though I did not appreciate this fact until much later), I was only beginning to develop the capacity for such things, and it was helpful to be given a vocabulary and nomenclature that enabled me to discuss these things with others.

I was talking with Michael about why buildings never have courtyards anymore. The more I study architecture and geography the more I am reminded that no two people perceive their environment in quite the same way, or perhaps it would be better to say that no two people live in quite the same universe. I perceive spaces in certain ways that are barely even comparable to the ways most other people would experience the very same spaces. I really like being around people who live in a sort of similar world to the one I inhabit, but such people are very hard to find.

When Charles Dickens visited the ruins of the Roman Colosseum in 1846, he was captivated by the "walls and arches overgrown with green … the long grass growing in its porches; young trees of yesterday, springing up on its ragged parapets, and bearing fruit; chance products of the seeds dropped there by birds." And not just by birds. A few years later, a visiting botanist cataloged 420 plant species in the ruin, many of them exotics from Asia and Africa that could only have come from seeds catching a lift on animals imported for the gladiatorial games. By 1880, archaeologists had scoured away this "recombinant ecology" and its fantastically rich history to leave behind the bleached edifice we know today.
